Fayol's 5 Functions

At the beginning of the last century (1916) the French engineer Henri Fayol created the first principles of management theory. Henri Fayol is classified as the founding father of for example the line and staff organization. Based on his experience as a successful director or a mining company, he developed several theories that are still relevant today.

Henri Fayol was a French mining engineer, mining executive, author and director of mines who developed general theory of business administration that is often called Fayolism. He and his colleagues developed this theory independently of scientific management but roughly contemporaneously. Like his contemporary, Frederick Winslow Taylor, he is widely acknowledged as a founder of modern management method.

Planning

Drawbacks

  • Best used in simple, stable organizations

  • Top-down only, communication is vertical, which is time consuming

  • Only concern internal problems
